Networking: Creating a group of acquaintances and associates and keeping it active through regular communication for mutual benefit.

Among the many things to be gained from studying in the U.S. is an understanding of the process of networking for both personal and professional purposes.

  Networking:

Provides access to insider information and informed insights about a field of employment

Builds long-term mentoring relationships with professionals and teachers

Provides competitive advantage in the job search process and job interviews

May result in clearer self-assessment of how a job is or is not aligned with your career aspirations

Networking can happen in unplanned and unfocused ways or it can occur with intention and purposefully. How can you do that I suggest the following principal “types” of connectivity that comprise a professional network:

Accidents & Acquaintances: Those we meet through unplanned and random encounters; perhaps to be seen again (at parties, informal campus events, lectures, etc)

Associates & Actors: Those encountered over time and usually because of a shared or common purpose (e.g: a professional event such as a symposium or workshop). Often, individuals with whom you share information and insights in a mutually supportive way over time.

Advocates & Allies: Those you know well and trust – people who will promote you and whom you promote. Allies are your most trusted professional friends who know your career aspirations and are valued mentors. This results at an advanced stage of networking where you have collaborated and/or worked with someone for a period of time.

You may find that career service advisors and faculty may bring up the subject of networking and offer advice to you about how to participate in on and off-campus activities which help build your network during your four years of study in the U.S. Building such a network is a very common aspect of professional life in the U.S.

Because the United States is such a diverse society and because the campus you choose to attend will also reflect this diversity, you will have the opportunity to interact with people from many different backgrounds. Your fellow students, teachers and administrators will all offer you unique perspectives about life in the country – and in the workplace. Studying in the U.S. may help you build a lifelong network of friends and professional mentors.
